The bar is called "Pelican Bar" because there are frequently a number of pelicans perched on the rocky sandbar next to it. The bar's initial clientele consisted primarily of Floyd and his fishing companions.

But it didn't take long for more people to want to stop by for a beverage than simply the fishermen. Floyd still serves beer and fishes here after 16 years, and in our opinion, visiting his tavern is one of the nicest things to do in Jamaica.

The bar is vulnerable to destruction during hurricane season due to its location in the midst of the ocean. The original Pelican bar was devastated by Hurricane Ivan in 2004. Thankfully, the neighbourhood joined together to support Floyd's reconstruction.
